Putting aside the oddity of adopting a near-naked style of dress for winter - short shorts with boots and parka is indeed weird - the slut look is not, it seems, a comfortable ensemble. The short skirts ride up and need constant tugging, the pantyhose with their ladders and holes must be difficult to put on without them disintegrating, the jeans held up only by the pubic bone require hitching up at intervals even though they are skin tight, and the side-less, back-less T-shirt seems to have lost its raison d'etre. And does one really pay more for jeans to be pre-slashed and frayed? It all seems so scruffy and undignified. Some wearers are obviously less secure with the look - while many women seem quite confident wearing opaque black tights with a top that might or might not be just long enough to cover their bottom, the more diffident cheat with a tiny pair of shorts.
It is strange, looking back, to think that there was a time when people worried about the glimpse of the hem of a petticoat, when now a petticoat is worn as a skimpy, lacy, flimsy skirt. Then there were advertisements in the media concerned about the ''visible panty line'' showing through skirts and slacks, when now it is the panties themselves that are very visible. And imagine, there were little straps that one sewed into clothes to make sure that bra straps didn't become visible, but now a girl has to own a large collection of bras in a wide range of colours, because they are outer garments that have to be colour-co-ordinated with the rest of the outfit. Go figure.
